Buzzfeed UK’s first longform story – 200,000 views in 3 days

April 8, 2014

Buzzfeed has been established as a top home for longform stories for a while. Their best articles are too numerous to list but this piece on Cryonics or their weekly digests of great features from across the web are good starting points.

I badgered Luke Lewis at the UK office for a while to commission something meaty for the site, and this celebration of the nerds that don medieval armour to engage in full contact fighting was the first thing they published.

Steve Kandell in the US office gave it the kind of insightful edit you often don’t get from old school print editors, and the piece did 200,000 views in the first weekend – pretty mental.

Incidentally, Buzzfeed (quite rightly) aren’t into the term “longform” – as Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith pointed out well on Medium recently – but I still think it covers longer ‘magazine’ type articles as well as any other term. Sure, it stuffs all kinds of writing into a pigeonhole marked only by word count, but it’s the best phrase we’ve got. For now.

If you’re after more verbose stuff I keep a lot on this Pinterest board as well as to a lesser extent this one.
